Art Literacy

Art Lit in the classroom is on hold. We’ll be back at it as soon as we can!

Art Literacy is our school’s only structured art program – AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Our program relies on volunteer parents to lead a 1-hour art project in each classroom each month of the school year. If you’d rather just be a helper we need plenty of those too! Monthly training nights are a really fun to get creative and meet with other parents at the school. You’ll have a lot of fun! Please contact Aimee Shepley to get involved.

This “hands on” program teaches kids how to look at and appreciate art from a wide array of artists. Parent volunteers (just like you!) work within a team to share six prepared lessons and art projects,  for the year. Our PSO generously provides funding for the lessons and project materials. The highlight of the year is the school-wide Art Lit Gallery in May. For two weeks, our library is transformed with a project from every child in every class. Parents are invited to come see what our talented artists have produced.

Just like math or science, art literacy is a discipline in which skills are built upon with each year. Art Lit enlarges our students’ ability to express themselves through their own artistic creations – and it’s a whole lot of fun, too! No art or teaching background is required to volunteer; so if you’re interested in joining the Art Lit Team, we’d love to hear from you.

Date: Monthly – 1-hour art lessons in each classroom

VOLUNTEER!
Classroom volunteers will spend 3 – 4 hours per month:

  • 1 – 2 hours at a prep meeting, learning about the artist and in-class project.
  • 1 – 1.5 hour(s) in-class teaching session.
  • Approximately 1 hour total for (a) preparing for the class project and (b) post project display
  • 2 – 4 volunteers PER classroom are ideal. No art background is necessary. This is a fun way to participate in the classroom!
