Read-A-Thon

Alberta Rider Elementary is excited to host its Read-A-Thon on 1/23 -1/29:

Hello ARE Families! It’s time for our second annual Alberta Rider Read-A-Thon! This fundraiser allows our students to raise money for our school while promoting literacy and a life-long love of reading! The funds raised support important PSO-sponsored programs, such as STEM, Art Lit, library, curriculum, and teacher assistants. We have a schoolwide goal of reading 50,000 minutes and earning $5,000 during this week.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE:

  • Each student sets a goal (in minutes) to read, or be read-to, over a 7-day period.
  • Students ask family and friends for flat-rate pledges for meeting their goal. This means, instead of pledging an amount per minute, sponsors pledge one amount towards the student meeting their reading goal.
  • The student and their parent/guardian complete the reading log each day.
  • At the end of the reading week (Jan. 29), students submit the minutes they read using the Google Form (QR code and link below and on the reading log). Minutes must be submitted by Wednesday, February 1st to be considered for prizes
  • All pledges need to be submitted via the Square link by Friday, February 3rd (link provided below and on the record sheet).
    • Pledges can also be made via cash or check to the PSO. They can be dropped off at the front office or mailed to the school to the attention of Jill Willard – PSO Treasurer.

GUIDELINES:

  • Any reading counts, including independent reading in class, listening to audiobooks, and reading books in any language!
  • Reading aloud to other people counts. If you read to someone who is also participating in the Read-A-Thon, it counts for both of you!
  • Record your minutes every day. No guessing or rounding up  – be accurate and honest.
  • Any pledge amount counts, no amount is too small. Pledges are encouraged but not necessary to participate in the raffle.
  • Most importantly, HAVE FUN!!!

PRIZES:

  • Every Read-A-Thon participant receives an entry into a drawing for prizes. We’ll have lots of fun prizes from local businesses!
    • More minutes equals more entries. A student will receive an extra entry in the drawing for every 60 minutes read, so if a student reads 180 minutes, they will get one entry for participation and three extra entries in the drawing.
  • The readers with the most minutes read in each grade level and the classes with the most minutes read in each grade level will also earn special prizes.
  • Additional prizes will be randomly selected and awarded to participating students.
  • If we reach our goal of 50,000 minutes, the entire school will receive Rockin’ Recess (a special recess time with music).
  • If your student does all of the activities on the attached Bingo board, they can submit it to their teacher for a $5 Golden Bull Buck.

Purpose:

Funds raised during this amazing event directly benefit the students of Alberta Rider! During last year’s fundraiser, we raised over $5,000 to support critical school needs. This year, our goal is to earn over $5,000 to benefit reading and math aides in our classrooms and fund class field trips, class parties, technology, and on-going school needs.
